Coosa

  • Age: 03/06/11
  • Gender: Colt
  • Color: Palamino
  • Breed: Welsh Section B

Coosa is a 16 year old Appendix (half Quarter Horse and half Thoroughbred) mare. We have been told that she started her life as a show horse in dressage. She does a beautiful extended trot and can do flying lead changes. Her movement is essential for the special riders we serve. Coosa lived for many years at the equestrian center at Melrose Resort on beautiful Daufuskie Island. At the same time that Melrose decided to temporarily close and remodel the Equestrian Center, Coosa became ill and needed to leave the island for medical attention. Melrose was kind enough to donate Coosa to PRA and Peggi (with the help of her brother Gary Noon) picked Coosa up off the barge and took her to the Equine Hospital at Edisto. Fortunately Coosa’s illness was not too serious but it did result in her losing her left eye. That was in September 2013 and her recovery is now complete. She enjoys serving the riders and is steady as a rock. Having one eye is not a disability for her. She has adjusted completely to her new surroundings and is doing a terrific job. Generally speaking, the children do not even notice that Coosa also has what could be considered a “handicap”. Her future is bright and PRA loves her.

Cisco

  • Age: 03/06/11
  • Gender: Colt
  • Color: Palamino
  • Breed: Welsh Section B

Cisco is an 11 year old Spotted American Saddlebred gelding. This breed is gaited, meaning they have an extra gait other than just walk, trot, canter and gallop. This gait is often called a rack which means that with a smooth, four-hoof beat Cisco can cover up to twenty miles per hour easily. He is Peggi’s personal horse and was trained and raised by her. He has always been in the equestrian service industry working with the public. He loves people! He is athletic, intelligent and very personable. At the farm he will most probably be the first one to come up and greet you. Before he left Daufuskie Island he did a photo shoot for Spartina 449 (click here to see the catalog and go to page 11!), a wonderful line of purses, jewelry and other items inspired by Daufuskie. At three years old, Cisco and Peggi were trained by Buck Brannaman, a rainier in natural horsemanship. Cisco loves fox hunting (no…we would never kill the fox) and swimming. Do not pause in the vicinity of a large mud puddle or he will lie down and roll! He enjoys therapeutic riding because of his love for working with people. His smooth gait makes him perfect for riders.

Malley

  • Age: 18
  • Gender: Colt
  • Color: Palamino
  • Breed: Welsh Section B

Malley is an 18 year old Spotted Ammerican Saddlebred mare. She is Cisco’s Mom and also belongs to Peggi. She is very sweet, quiet, small, and has a narrow build which makes her the perfect horse for Pegasus’s students with the most challenging disabilities.

Gertie

  • Age: 03/06/11
  • Gender: Colt
  • Color: Palamino
  • Breed: Welsh Section B

Gertie is probably the quietest horse and the most affordable to keep in our entire barn! She is used to get a rider used to the riding position and how to hold the reins, without the distraction of a live horse moving underneath them. It’s also a great way to prepare a nervous rider. The neck is articulated so that a pull on one of the reins will make the head move realistically in the correct direction. She is also useful for teaching the parts of the horse, as kids can identify her eyes, ears, mane and tail. Mike Cross, Pegasus Board of Directors President and his wife Jacqui kindly donated the materials for Gertie, plus the ramp, offset block and more, while Mike built them. Gertie travels to special events and has introduced many kids to riding.
